A couple of weeks back, the wonderful friends at the Barefoot Yoga Company sent me one of their yoga mats – the Hybrid Eco-Lite Yoga Mat. I was really curious about the yoga mat because it is an eco-friendly yoga mat, made from 100% recycled polyester, but at the same time, it is an extremely affordable yoga mat (priced at $23.95!).
When I took out the yoga mat from the packaging, what struck me the most was how thin the mat was. It is lightweight, thin, but also provides sufficient cushion. For yogis who prefer to be able to feel the ground but yet have a comfortable practice with good grip and a little cushion, this would certainly be an ideal mat.
This is also a great mat for travelling because of its lightweight nature. Each Hybrid Eco-Lite yoga mat comes with a strap (additional $1.95) which makes carrying the yoga mat a lot more hassle-free. If you travel often or like to do some outdoor yoga, this would definitely be a great choice to go with.
Given that it is made from 100% recycled polyester, there is no odour at all. I’ve owned a Lululemon yoga mat (which was around twice the price) and it has such a strong odour that I hardly use it anymore because it’s so distracting when I’m in my child’s pose or savasana. It really allows me to practice in ease and comfort without worrying about the material and smell of the yoga mat.
What I liked about the yoga mat
I am impressed with the great grip that the mat provides, and it did not move around during my practice. I was also able to feel the ground better as opposed to thicker mats, and I kind of liked that change because I’ve always practiced on thicker mats. I felt I was able to engage the four corners of my foot better during my balancing poses, which really helped me adjust my pose a lot better. I also wasn’t slipping around during my sun salutations, and I didn’t have to worry about constantly adjusting my mat or to make sure that I wasn’t slipping anywhere. It almost felt like I forgot my yoga mat was even there! This really made the yoga practice very enjoyable, and I was able to focus on my practice rather than having to make sure that I wasn’t slipping around.
There are also lots of colours to choose from! I’m pretty sure you will definitely be able to find a colour that you like.
It is also very easy to take care of the mat. Just wipe down with water or a little soap after your practice and you’re pretty much set.
Most importantly, it is really affordable! If you are just starting out on yoga and you’re not sure if you want to invest a lot of money on a mat, this is a great choice for you. This mat is inexpensive and has great quality. Or if you’re already practicing yoga regularly and you need a travel mat, I would strongly recommend this as well. Not only is it affordable, it is lightweight that makes it easy for you to carry it around.
However, because the mat is thin, some of you may prefer a thicker mat because it provides more cushion and support, which makes practicing certain poses less painful. It all depends on what you are looking for in a yoga mat and whether or not you prefer thicker and thinner mats. You can always double up with a towel if certain poses may hurt because your joint is pressing against the ground.
